United aim to profit in FA Trophy against Moneyfields

EVESHAM United will be bidding to bounce back from league disappointment when they entertain Moneyfields in the FA Trophy extra preliminary round on Sunday (3pm).

The Portsmouth outfit, who have five points from as many games in Southern League Division One South, will arrive at the Jubilee to face a Robins side who saw their five-match winning streak in the division brought to an end by fellow high-flyers Yate Town on Saturday.

The south Gloucestershire side were 2-1 winners at the Jubilee in what was a frustrating affair for Paul Collicutt’s men, who now sit second in the table – a point behind leaders Blackfield & Langley – with unbeaten Yate third and a point behind United with a game in hand.

On a slick playing surface following heavy rain, clearcut chances were hard to come by in the first half, although United’s Corey Simpson’s had a low strike saved before Yate’s David Sims-Burgess saw his effort cleared off the line by Linden Dovey just before the break.

Yate were not to be denied shortly into the second half though when a brilliant 25-yard free-kick from Nick Peare left Evesham keeper Harvey Rivers with no chance.

Evesham eventually rallied and Steve Davies spurned an excellent chance from close range midway through the second half before the hosts were denied again when a shot was blocked on the goalline – in many Evesham’s eyes illegally by a Yate hand – but the referee did not agree.

However, it was Yate who netted the game’s crucial second goal when Sims-Burgess evaded the offside trap and rounded Rivers before slotting the ball into an empty net on 70 minutes.

Evesham reduced their arrears on 78 minutes when Davies converted a cross from substitute Tyrone Tucker-Dixon, but the home side were unable to find an equaliser.

Subject to any FA Trophy replay, Evesham will host Southern Premier Central outfit Stourbridge in the league’s Challenge Cup on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, due to Gloucester City’s home FA Cup tie, the Robins’ home league match against Thatcham Town has been moved back 24 hours and will now take place on Sunday, October 7 (3pm).
