RUGBY UNION - Young Pershore side edged out by Old Yardleians

PERSHORE RFC were forced to settle for two bonus points after suffering a 31-26 defeat to fourth-placed Old Yardleians at Piddle Park.

Centre Chris Steele ran in two tries for the home side with Stefan Ellis and Gregory Hitchcock also dotting down as Pershore claimed a try-bonus and losing bonus point.

The result means Pershore sit ninth in the table, just two places and four points above bottom side Chaddesley Corbett who have a game in hand.

And the home side more than matched their higher ranked opponents throughout with stand-in captain Stef Staveley producing a big defensive shift alongside Hitchcock.

Pershore’s younger players Harry and Tom Westby and home-grown Ben Crouch and Staveley, who both graduated from the club’s Juniors and Colts sections, all made an impact and justified their selection.

Dave Oliver added three conversions with the boot but Old Yardleians just held on to take the points.

Pershore are next in action at home to Upton-on-Severn in a local derby on Saturday, March 12 with kick-off at 3pm at Piddle Park.
