Morris vows to keep on improving after crucial innings

CHARLIE Morris is determined to keep working on improving his batting after scoring his maiden LV=Insurance County Championship half-century.

The paceman came in as nightwatchman and hit exactly 50 on day two of the meeting with Leicestershire at New Road, which Worcestershire dominated.

It followed on from his 53 not out against Australia two years ago and his century for the Seconds against Leicestershire at Stourport three weeks ago.

Morris blunted the Foxes new ball attack before spinner Callum Parkinson bowled him and it played a key part in the latter batsmen being able to take advantage as Worcestershire closed on 378-6.

He said: “I’m certainly working hard on my batting and enjoying it at the minute. I will keep working hard, and hopefully, there will be some more runs to contribute in the games ahead.

“I worked really hard on my defensive game over time. I could always play shots but it’s just having the intent to score and the trust in myself and the mindset to do that.

“I’m by no means the finished article. I’ve got a lot of work to do with my batting, but I’m pleased to be contributing in some small ways, and I will keep endeavouring to do that.”

Morris was able to figure in a century stand for the second wicket with Jake Libby (77|), which laid the foundations for Gareth Roderick, Brett D’Oliveira, Ed Cox and Ben Cox to make sizeable contributions.

He said: “Fundamentally, it was about protecting Gareth Roderick’s wicket on Tuesday night (as nightwatchman), and I managed to do that.

“From there on, you are thinking ‘anything is a bonus, and I just tried to bat as long as I could. It is about getting overs in the legs (of the opponents) and also about blunting the new ball as much as we can.

“The longer you can bat out there, the older the ball is, and the batters that come in get a slightly easier job – and then overs in the legs later in the day does make a difference.

“It’s hard work as a bowler coming back for your third or fourth spell, and that’s where fitness is a really important factor and where you as a batter can potentially get a few more boundaries away.

“Jake (Libby) batted fantastically, and it was great to be out there with him. He has scored so many runs this season, over the 1,000 mark, and it was good to tap in on all his experience and what he could offer.

“I was hoping to push on and bat longer after lunch, but he (Callum Parkinson) bowled the arm ball to get me out. It just swung back, a really good ball.

“All in all, a really good day for us.

“I’m sure Ed (Barnard) and Ben (Cox) will be keen to push on, and we’ve still got Joe (Leach), Josh Baker, who got 61 last week, and Dillon (Pennington), who got 50 against Essex to come.

“A good session tomorrow (Thursday) morning will set us up nicely for the day and put us in a really strong position.”

Morris was delighted that Worcestershire were able to back up an impressive performance with the ball on day one with a strong effort with the bat.

He said: “We haven’t hit our straps consistently enough this season. We have done it in patches, and we have played some really good cricket.

“So that has been really pleasing, the last two days and hopefully on Thursday we start well, have a good half hour, and that will set us up nicely for day three.”
