Mixed weather fortunes for Broadway golfers

Evesham Editorial 22nd Aug, 2017   0

A BEAUTIFUL summer morning greeted Broadway Golf Club’s ladies when they competed for the England Golf Medal and Winifred Stephens Trophy.

Players made the most of the weather and the stunning course conditions, not least in the Silver Division as Pat Righton prevailed with a nett 74 ahead of Linda Carruthers who shared the same score but was second on countback. Carruthers also achieved lowest gross on the day with a tremendous 79.

Pat Beaman completed the top trio in the Silver Division, securing a close third place with 75.

Striding to the top of Bronze Division and earning the overall winning Medal position was Andi Stedman who brought in a fine 72 nett, leaving Irene Hawkes and Esther Pettitt to vie for second and third places with 75 nett, with Hawkes finishing second on countback.

The Winifred Stephens Trophy was donated in 1962 and was up for grabs for all of the previous season’s Medal winners.

On this occasion it was deservedly won by Carruthers, with Hawkes runner-up.

LATER in the week, Broadway’s past captains were out to play for the Sutton Cup in conditions which could not have been more of a contrast.

The winds had picked up and, when the showers came, they were torrential, but all 24 competitors showed their determination as they continued with their quest for the prestigious trophy.

The contest was played on the 50th anniversary of the year the trophy was presented by Jack Sutton, an esteemed past captain who served at Broadway between 1964/65.

The clear winner was Philip Cloke who made light work of the conditions by scoring an excellent 43 points to earn the trophy.

Cloke was captain of his previous club Littlestone Warren in 2006 and only recently joined Broadway, but is clearly finding the course to his liking.

In second place was treasurer Paul Wragby who battled the elements to bring in a solid 38 points, leaving Arthur Gray, captain in 1987, to clinch third place with an admirable 37.
