Late despair for Robins

Evesham Editorial 27th Feb, 2020   0

EVESHAM United’s Southern League Division One South play-off hopes faded as Devon visitors Bideford salvaged a last-gasp 2-2 draw at the Jubilee Stadium on Saturday.

The Robins are now ninth after surrendering a 2-0 lead which cost them two points and leaves them four adrift of the only realistic remaining play-off spot having played two games more.

The first of 11 remaining fixtures takes Carl Abbott’s men to Highworth Town on Saturday when nothing but three points will do for an Evesham team who appeared to be heading for victory last time out.

Lee Chilton opened the scoring on 52 minutes with a strike from a tight angle after a brilliant run from Paul Sullivan and the advantage was doubled 13 minutes later when Jamie Lucas converted from close range.

However, Archie Reay pulled one back in the 81st minute and then Toby Down struck four minutes into stoppage time to rescue a point for the mid-table visitors.

There was better news off the field for United as Brad Maslen-Jones and Adam Page signed contracts committing their futures to the club until the end of next season on the back of Harry Franklin penning a deal last week.
