A RECENT highlight in Broadway Golf Club’s calendar was the men’s Invitation, supported again this year by a full field of members and their guests from many wide-ranging clubs across the country.

The course provided members and visitors alike with its usual exceptional playing conditions and, with the weather set fair, all went out looking forward to their game.

Making the most of the conditions was Broadway’s Ian Noyce and his partner Steve Nicholson from Mottram Hall Golf Club who achieved a deserved first place with a superb 46 points.

Home player Joe Williams was a close second with 45 points with his partner David Ross from Stratford Oaks, leaving Jim Titley to take a commendable third with partner Richard Bucknall from Wellingborough Golf Club with 44 points.

The following day, 70 Broadway men supported the Founders Cup, presented in 1925 in memory of the club’s founder Dr C T Standring.

Conditions were perfect as was demonstrated by the superb scores which were coming in. Junior star Scott Davis was tremendous in bringing in an outstanding 63 nett to seal victory.

Junior captain Joe Golding earned an excellent second place with 66 nett, ahead of Tom Roberts who took third with 67.

Bobby Webb edged into fourth with 68 nett and also achieved best gross on the day with an impressive 71.

Broadway’s ladies took part in their Centenary Trophy, presented to the ladies’ section in 1995 to mark the club’s anniversary.

The competition is always a popular one to support. The course was still playing well, but the weather was a little disappointing as the 44 ladies went out.

Silver Division’s Molly King-Smith brought in a conclusive lead with a first-rate 36 points to earn her the trophy.

Second and third positions were taken by Sheila Lawson and Annabelle Carter who both earned 31 points, with Lawson second on countback.

In the Bronze Division, Diana Chambers was victorious with 35 points ahead of ladies’ vice-captain Maggie McDivitt who clinched second on countback. Janet Sandalls did well to achieve a close third with 34 points.

The juniors were out at the weekend demonstrating their enthusiasm and agility and brought in individual Stableford scores most could only ever dream of.

Junior captain Joe Golding was performing at the peak of his game once again as he triumphed with a magnificent 50 points, ahead of second placed Scott Davis who earned 42.

Joshua Coleman took a worthy third place with 38 points on countback from fourth placed Hywel Gadsby-Evans.
