BROADWAY Golf Club welcomed 70 competitors from 17 clubs across the country for their Ladies Open, which took place in fine weather.

The course provided excellent playing conditions and the scores were there to be made. A three-ball Alliance was chosen as the format, with one score to count on the first hole, two on the second and all three on the third, with this being repeated across 18 holes.

Home, mixed and away prizes were awarded and Broadway’s team of Judith Noyce, Frances Friend and Rita Harrison registered a tremendous 75 points to secure the ‘home’ prize.

Winners of the mixed category, also with a superb 75 points, were home players Sue Barker and Jane Wheeler with their visiting team member, Helen Milner from Wrexham Golf Club.

The winning ‘away’ team had travelled from Droitwich and clearly found the course to their liking as Nicola Phillips, Fiona Whittock and Judy Millinchip made an impressive 71 to clinch the title.

Broadway ladies’ captain Brenda Corfield was delighted to announce her charity Fund for St Richard’s Hospice had grown by a fabulous £305 on the day through the sale of raffle tickets and kind donations.

THE FOLLOWING day, Broadway’s men competed in the Past Captains Millennium Trophy which was won by 2015 captain Warren McDivitt who scored an outstanding 39 points to earn the prestigious tankard.

Chris Wright, captain in 2005, achieved second place with a first-rate 38 and 2009 skipper Tony Reeve was third with 37, leaving 1987 captain Arthur Gray fourth on countback.

SIXTEEN Broadway teams competed in the Challis Cup at the weekend and were once again treated to some glorious sunshine.

Donated in 1979 by former ladies’ captain Gwen Challis in memory of her husband Frederick, the trophy was intended for married couples only.

The format chosen was a Greensomes Bogey and teams went out optimistic as they played against their opponents on a course in immaculate condition.

Andi and Mark Stedman claimed a convincing victory with a fine score of plus 8 to take the trophy.

John and Sonia Ward were also in good form to finish runners-up with an excellent plus 5, leaving last year’s title winners Ian and Judith Noyce third on countback.
