Avonsiders prevail in tense encounter

EVESHAM cemented sixth place in Midlands Two West (South) with a gritty 11-6 victory over visitors Leamington on Saturday.

On the back of successive league defeats, the hosts knew they would have to dig deep to return to winning ways, especially given the awful conditions the game was played in as heavy rain fell throughout.

This was not the occasion for expansive rugby and both teams kept it tight as they slugged it out in the forwards, where the home side were dominant in the scrum.

Despite this, scoring opportunities were hard to come by, although Evesham’s Ash Icke scored the only try of the game early on.

Mike Diston missed the conversion but slotted over two penalties later in the first half for an 11-3 lead at the break.

The visitors defended well in the second half to avoid conceding any further points and sneaked a penalty of their own before the final whistle to claim a losing bonus point.

Evesham visit second-placed Malvern on Saturday.
