Town streets get clean-up in council’s yearly event

A MAJOR bid to clean up the streets of Evesham and Pershore has been launched by Wychavon District Council.

The district council’s contractors, FCC Environment, are out in force, using specialist equipment to scrub the pavements to remove dirt, stains and chewing gum.

The deep cleanse started in Pershore last week and will also be carried out in Evesham and Droitwich Spa town centres, as well as Broadway village. The cleaning process usually takes one to six weeks to complete in each area.

The annual clean-up is part of the council’s commitment to keep the district clean, green and safe for residents.

More than £1.5million is spent on street cleaning every year in the district. Wychavon has also invested £30,000 in a three-year campaign to reduce litter through education, litter-picks and enforcement action.

Coun Emma Stokes, district council portfolio holder for environment, recycling and street scene, said: “Every year the street cleaners from FCC Environment do an amazing job in maintaining the high standards of cleanliness in our town centres.

“I would like to thank them for their hard work and I know that shoppers, residents and visitors will notice a real difference.”

Council leader Coun Bradley Thomas said: “As a council, we aim to provide a clean, green and safe environment for our residents and the annual deep cleanse is an essential part of this. Wychavon has repeatedly been named as one of the best areas in the country to live and we are committed to working with our partners to continue to achieve this.”
