Tesco triumphant in retail challenge cup clash

Evesham Editorial 21st Aug, 2019   0

SUPERMARKET staff took to the football pitch for a long-running charity match in support of St Richard’s Hospice.

Rival teams from Evesham Morrisons and Tesco went head-to-head in the Annual Retail Challenge Cup – which has been held for 22 years.

Evesham United’s Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium was the venue for the clash on August 4 and saw Tesco win the match, beating Morrisons 7-2.

The event raised more than £2,200 for the hospice, with Barclays match-funding the raffle. To date, the event has raised more than £25,000 for the hospice, which cares for patients from Evesham.

Organiser Mark Payne said: “I was very pleased with the turnout of people on the day, the result of the match – and, of course, the great amount we raised for St Richard’s, beating last year’s total.

“A massive thank you to Evesham Barclays for adding to the total, to Evesham United for once again staging the event and to one of my favourite footballers, Robbie Dennison of Wolves, for attending and presenting the awards.”

Claire James, fund-raiser at St Richard’s Hospice, said: “We had a fantastic time at the match and would like to congratulate both teams for an enjoyable game.

“Over the years, this event has raised an astonishing amount for our care and we are extremely grateful to everyone involved for such fantastic support.

“It is only thanks to the tireless support of our community that we can continue caring for patients, their loved ones and bereaved people across the county.”

The Man of the Match trophy, in memory of long-serving Tesco staff member Shirley Barber, was awarded to Jack Lambert.
