STAFF at two Evesham supermarkets swapped food for football in the annual Retail Challenge Cup and helped raise more than £2,000 for St Richard’s Hospice.

Morrisons staff came up against Tesco’s finest on Sunday (August 5) in the special charity match to raise funds for hospice and Tesco won the cup back in the final seconds of the game as they secured a 3-2 victory.

The match has been played each year since 1998, when Tesco staff member Mark Payne decided to raise money for St Richard’s following the death of his mother, Gill Payne, who was cared for and supported at the hospice.

This year’s star player will be awarded the Man of the Match in memory of Shirley Barber, a much loved member of staff at Tesco who passed away suddenly last year.

The cash raised on the evening was doubled by Barclays Bank meaning £2,065 will be donated to the Worcester-based hospice.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “It was an incredibly hot evening but very entertaining.

“Thanks to everyone who participated in the game from Tesco and Morrisons, we couldn’t do it without you!”
