Recycling a good idea

MEMBERS of Cycle Evesham Vale (CEV) marked their Christmas Fayre with a cheque for £2,000 to Evesham Adventure Playground chair of trustees Jenny Wormall.

In presenting the cheque raised at Evesham CycleFest in September, Chairman Robin Walker praised all the great work the Adventure Playground does for the community, the town and the planet.

“One of CEV’s key aims is to ‘Get More Bums on Bikes in the Vale of Evesham’, and the Adventure Playground has really helped with this through their ‘Playground Peddlers’ bike recycling scheme, bringing old bikes back to life and providing them at low cost to those who need them,” he said.

“This has got more kids cycling to school, more adults cycling to work, and less people using their cars for shorter journeys. This will lead to less traffic in the town, happier, healthier kids, and a fitter, more active community,” Mr Walker added.

Volunteers have supported Cyclefest in a number of ways, helping with feed stations, having a stall in the event village and loaning their electric van as a support vehicle.

Programme manager Dave Boucker said: “This donation will help us to invest more in the bike recycling project and other schemes to benefit the environment and the community.

“The Peddlers scheme not only provides bikes to those who need them, but it also provides practical skills and learning for children who struggle in mainstream education, gives retired people the opportunity to work alongside them on the bikes in a friendly, supportive environment.

“It has saved more than 3,000kg of bikes going to landfill in just six months. We welcome new volunteers to support the work and if anyone has bikes they no longer need, or a children’s bike that is now too small and want to swap, please bring them to the Playground, and help us to get more people cycling.”
