Phoenix group rising from the ashes with new productions

A MUCH-LOVED Evesham amateur dramatic society has launched its bid to rise from the ashes with two shows for Vale residents to enjoy.

Devoted members of the Phoenix Theatre Group were left heartbroken in May when three decades worth of costumes, props and scenery were destroyed in a major fire at their storage unit.

This on top of the pandemic which saw two productions axed because of Covid restrictions pushed the group to its limit.

But rather than despair, the Phoenix is set to rise once again after committee members rolled up their sleeves to ensure the show must go on.

Chairman Mike Robinson, said: “Our committee met just after the fire, via Zoom, and we all agreed we’d vow to carry on, pick up the pieces and bring our company back onto the Evesham Art Centre stage.

“We’ve had to scale back this year’s musical production but we were determined to get our young cast back in front of a live audience as soon as possible.

“We decided on a compilation show of more than 20 musicals plus a bit of comedy. We’ve also cast our 2022 panto, Dick Whittington, and rehearsals start for that next month.

“That production will hopefully see us back to normal with a larger cast and our usual six performances,” he added.

While lockdown restrictions have made rehearsals difficult initially, the restricted cast members have been working hard on next month’s production, aptly entitled ‘The Show Must Go On!’.

“It’s a mixture of musical numbers from the big West End shows, plus a little of the comedy the group are known for,” Mike said.

“We’ve even managed to put in a potted pantomime, as we couldn’t perform one this past year due to Covid restrictions.”

The Show Must Go On hits the Evesham Arts Centre stage – now renamed The Henrician – on Friday, October 8 and Saturday, October 9.

Tickets are just £6 for The Show Must Go On and tickets are also on sale for Dick Whittington.
