Evesham’s MP Nigel Huddleston writes for the Observer…

SOMETHING my family and I look forward to every year is visiting the confetti fields at Wick because not only is it spectacularly beautiful, but also it signals that Summer is finally here.  And right across the constituency the warmer weather is lifting the mood, helped just a little by our recent victory against Germany in the Euros!

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting more festivals and events this month including the well-attended Broadway Arts Festival, showcasing some incredible local talent. I’ve also been able to visit more schools and businesses, including joining in with a litter pic in Droitwich and visiting a new additions to the Blackminster Business Park such as Tickly Tapir and My Cookie Club.

I also recently had a meeting with the Chief Fire Officer in Droitwich Fire Station and met the other members of the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue team – much to the delight of my constituency assistant! It was good to take time to discuss the challenges facing our emergency services personnel who do a fantastic job of keeping us all safe.

In Westminster, I’ve responded to some high-profile debates this month. In one, I spoke about football governance and the fan-led review. In another – following the extension of easing restrictions – I answered an Urgent Question on the Events Research Programme. The Programme involves trial events being monitored, and which will pave the way in getting the events sector up and running safely. I was pleased to announce that we’re entering phase 3 of the Programme where, amongst other events, we’ll hold the first full-capacity outdoor sporting event since the pandemic began – the men’s and women’s finals on centre court at Wimbledon.

I know that we’re all looking forward to getting back to near normal life again but I am aware many individuals, families and businesses are still suffering from the impact of the pandemic and many of us were disappointed by the delay in easing restrictions this month. Rest assured I will continue to do what I can in the constituency and in Westminster to provide support during this recovery stage.
