STAFF from two NHS Trusts spent last Saturday cycling and walking the route stroke patients take across the county.

Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust run the County’s stroke rehabilitation Centre at Evesham Community Hospital and on May 12 they joined their NHS colleagues from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust to raise money for the Stroke Association by completing the patient journey from Worcester to the Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Centre in Bromsgrove.

The first stage of the journey saw members of staff walking from Worcester Royal Hospital where patients are first treated after a stroke, to Pershore Community Hospital where the South Community Stroke Team are based, on then on to Evesham Community Hospital, home of the Worcestershire Rehabilitation Centre.

From Evesham the cycle tag team took over and continued to the Princess of Wales Community Hospital where the North Community Stroke Team and Neurology Rehab team are based.

The team support people in the community who have had a stroke and work with them in their home or in clinics to help them recover.

The last and shortest leg of the route saw the team finish their journey at the Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Centre in Bromsgrove.

Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust work closely with the Stroke Association which provides support and advice to patients and carers throughout their stroke journey.

Marsha Jones, Community Services manager at Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust said, “I am so proud of all of my colleagues who took part in this challenge with me and helped to raise awareness of stroke and how one can be prevented.

“The best way to help prevent a stroke is to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol; these lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of problems like: arteries becoming clogged with fatty substances, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels.”
