DRIVERS are keeping an eagle eye on petrol prices following the spike in the cost of living.
It comes as the cost of filling an average family car has now reached £100 for the first time, 48 hours after the price of petrol saw its biggest daily jump for 17 years.
The RAC called it ‘a truly dark day’ as the cost of filling a 55-litre tank with petrol reached £100.27 and £103.43 for diesel.
Oil prices remain high due to the war in Ukraine and sanctions to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russia.
In March, the government cut fuel duty by 5p a litre for a year, but the RAC has called for more help for motorists with either a further reduction or a VAT cut.
The average price of petrol rose to 180.73p per litre on Tuesday, the RAC said.
Meanwhile, the average price of diesel rose by almost 1.5p to another record high of 186.57p per litre
