A STUNNING mural that reflects the heritage of Evesham has been given a permanent new home thanks to a grant approved by Evesham Place Board.

The colourful artwork designed and painted by members of Garage Art Group has reappeared in Abbey Park in a new frame funded by Wychavon’s share of the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Inspired by the town’s river setting, the abbey and depicting its founder St Egwin, the piece was originally commissioned in 2018 by Evesham Abbey Trust.

Its purpose was to screen a shipping container required in the renovation of Abbey Gardens but was removed in early 2023 when the work was complete.

Barrie Baldelli, chair of Evesham Abbey Trust, said: “It’s lovely to preserve something that a group of people worked so hard to produce.

“It’s an important feature and the icing on the cake after the completion of the abbey restoration project.”

Garage Art Group based at Wallace House Community Centre, provides creative workshops for all ages and abilities with the support of professional art tutors.

Volunteer facilitator Deb Whitehouse, a former art teacher, said: “We are really glad that the mural has been re-used and put in the park on public display. Each of the panels was painted by a member of the group and represents all abilities.”

The installation has now been officially handed over to Wychavon District Council which launched Evesham Place Board in 2022 to improve the town.

Its chair, Tom Tarver, added: “Improving the appearance of Evesham’s public areas is one of the priorities for the place board. We’re delighted this artwork is now on display for everyone to enjoy.”
