MP joins calls urging BT to clean up Evesham's Telephone Exchange

EVESHAM’S MP Nigel Huddleston has added his voice to calls for BT to clean up the Telephone Exchange by saying the state of the building is ‘inconsistent’ with the image of a ‘town on the up.’

The Observer previously reported on Evesham Mayor Coun Fred Kaler’s concerns about the condition and lack of maintenance of the Abbey Road building, which forced BT to defend their maintenance record.

Mr Huddleston has now echoed the concerns expressed by the outspoken Mayor and has told BT directly their exchange is getting in the way of Evesham’s goal of regenerating and improving the look of the town centre.

“I have spoken to the Mayor, Fred Kaler, about the BT building on Abbey Road and have also received several letters from constituents expressing concerns about the state of the property,” Mr Huddleston said.

“I have raised the issue with BT’s public affairs team, received some positive noises, and am now awaiting a response.

“I stressed how important it is that as we regenerate the town, that the buildings on the roads leading in to the town centre present the image of a town on the up – and that the state of the BT building is often inconsistent with that goal.”

In response, a spokesman for BT said: “We are currently carrying out an assessment at this exchange and will be in contact with Mr Huddleston with a full update in due course.”
