Mayor limbers up for marathon effort for chosen causes

Evesham Editorial 26th Apr, 2020   0

MAYOR of Evesham Coun Mark Goodge and his family are limbering up for a charity challenge in a bid to raise cash for his chosen causes.

Every year, the town’s first citizen chooses a set of charities to raise funds for over the course of their term of office.

This year’s fund has been badly hit with the cancellation of the annual firework display due to bad weather before the current Covid-19 lockdown saw all remaining fund-raising events axed.

As part of the 2.6 challenge, Coun Goodge and his family will be doing a marathon in their street as the Mayor of Evesham is joined by his wife Emma, daughters Ellie and Abigail and baby Nathaniel for laps of their street.

A full lap of the street, starting at their home, walking all the way to one end, then to the other end and back to their house, is just under half a mile.

A marathon is just over 26 miles. The family therefore have set the target of 55 laps of the street, which is near enough a marathon.

It’s hoped the challenge will raise £4,000 as that’s the amount Evesham’s Mayor would normally have expected to raise from the firework display.

Anything above and beyond will help compensate for the other events which have had to cancelled this spring.

The three causes that benefit from the Mayor’s Fund this year are: Caring Hands in the Vale, Evesham Shopmobility and Evesham Girlguiding
