Green flags proudly unfurled again

Rob George 25th Oct, 2021

GREEN Flags are proudly flying in Evesham and Pershore’s parks after they were once again recognised for their quality.

All five of Wychavon’s District Council’s popular parks – Abbey Park and Workman/Waterside Gardens in Evesham, Vines Park and Lido Park/St Peters Fields in Droitwich Spa, and Abbey Park in Pershore – have retained their Green Flag Award status after impressing judges.

Droitwich Community Woods, which Wychavon manages along with Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, has received the award for the second year in a row.

To celebrate the achievement and recognise the wonderful work done to provide safe spaces for the public to exercise in during a difficult year, Evesham Bell Tower was lit up green last Thursday (October 14) along with other buildings across the country.

The awards, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognise well-managed parks, and green spaces. They set the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Abbey Park in Evesham has now won the award 16 years running, since first being entered in 2005. All five parks have now had Green Flag status for nine years.

The award is valid for one year only, and if a park/green space is to maintain its green flag it must re-apply annually.

Coun Emma Stokes, executive board member for Environmen, said: “Our parks and open spaces were a lifeline for many during the height of lockdown restrictions and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate them in this way.

“To retain our Green Flag status, despite the pressures of the pandemic, is a testament to the dedication of our parks team and our contractors Continental Landscapes and Smart Cut, who have worked tirelessly throughout to maintain these high standards.”

Residents are now being urged to vote for their favourite Wychavon park for a People’s Choice Award, which celebrates the best loved parks on the planet.
