Gove gives festival the green light

ENVIRONMENT Secretary Michael Gove lent his support to the British Asparagus Festival after an invitation from Evesham’s MP Nigel Huddleston.

The Mid Worcestershire MP extended an invitation to Mr Gove during questions in the House of Commons last Thursday (May 9) which saw him urge the secretary of state to show his support for British farmers who grow world-class food produce.

Mr Huddleston told the Environment Secretary that Vale of Evesham asparagus is the only asparagus with EU protected geographical indication (PGI) status and is just one of six UK fruit and vegetables to have a protected food name.

The British Asparagus Festival began on April 23 to mark the start of asparagus season and events continue until 21 June, including the annual 5k run, which Mr Huddleston plans to attend.

The Secretary of State thanked Mr Huddleston for raising awareness of the work that asparagus growers do to boost Britain’s agricultural exports, generating more than £3.2million for the UK economy.

“Although I cannot join the festival, I would be delighted to share some asparagus with my honourable friend at the first available opportunity,” Mr Gove added.

This response comes in addition to the assurances given to Mr Huddleston by the Government last year that it will ensure Vale of Evesham asparagus retains its PGI status post-Brexit.
