Fire service issues ‘turn them off’ appeal over domestic appliances

FIREFIGHTERS are urging people to make sure they turn off their appliances before leaving their homes.

The call comes from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) as lockdown restrictions continue to ease this month.

From May 17 more people will be meeting up outside, leading the service to remind residents to turn off electrical appliances such as tumble dryers and dishwashers.

Fires can be started from faulty appliances left unattended and/or overloaded plugs.

Electrical fires can be prevented by checking that the electrical equipment is in good shape and is operated properly.

Station commander Thom Morgan said: “Half of all accidental fires start with an electrical appliance. It is absolutely vital that you check your electrics are in good working order and are used properly.

“It’s also important to unplug things which are aren’t in use and turn appliances off when you’re out of the house and at night.

“Everyone should also have working smoke alarms on every level of their home and test them regularly.”

Other advice includes keeping appliances clean and in good working order and making sure refrigerators, washers and dryers are plugged directly into a wall outlet.
