Labour reveal ex-midwife bidding to become Pershore's MP

A FORMER midwife has been selected as Labour’s candidate to contest the West Worcestershire seat in June’s General Election.

Samantha Charles, who worked as a community midwife in the NHS in Worcestershire for 20 years, has been chosen by party members locally to stand in the June 8 poll.

The Labour candidate vying to become Pershore’s MP also co-founded People in Motion, a local charity which supports displaced people in UK and across Europe and the Middle East.

During her time in the health service, Samantha said she witnessed the effects the ‘damaging Tory cuts’ had on the NHS and social care, and has vowed to ‘safeguard’ public services if she is elected.

She has though been given the huge task of overturning the Conservative majority in West Worcestershire. In 2015, Harriett Baldwin stormed to victory with a majority of more than 22,000 votes.

Labour has never won the seat since it was created in 1997 and has finished in third place in West Worcestershire at every General Election. However, the party did increase its share of the vote two years ago by 6.6 per cent.

Following her selection as the Labour candidate, Samantha said: “Labour will stand up for you.

“We will deliver a better, fairer Britain where prosperity is shared, everyone is rewarded fairly for hard work and where a home to rent or buy is affordable.

“We will build a Britain for the many, not the few,” she added.
