COUNCIL chiefs are feeling flush after Wychavon scooped the best public toilets in England honour at the annual Loo of the Year Awards.

As well as the national title, judges were particularly impressed with the loo in Church Close in Broadway, naming it the best public toilet in a car park.

Three of Wychavon’s toilets – Viaduct Meadow in Evesham, St Andrew’s in Droitwich and Church Close in Broadway – also received the new Diamond Award status.

The level was introduced this year to recognise toilets with the highest standards of cleaning and facilities which meet the needs of all users including children, babies and those who need additional space and equipment.

All three toilets have had changing places facilities installed which include a height adjustable changing table and sink, ceiling hoist and other aids to support people with disabilities.

A series of environmental measures have also been put in place including solar panels, LED lighting, water saving flush toilets and Dyson Airblade tap/dryers.

All Wychavon’s other toilets received platinum status, making it the best set of results the council has ever achieved at the awards.

Wychavon also retained its place in the Champions League of toilets and was placed seventh in the national Loo of the Year league table.

Coun Emma Stokes, executive board member for Environment, said: “We continue to invest in our toilets because we know how much residents and visitors value them and it’s wonderful to see that recognised at a national level.

“I’d like to thank our staff and contractor Mitie for their hard work in helping achieve this fabulous set of results.”

Run by the British Toilet Association, the Loo of the Year Awards rank toilets provided by different organisations on a range of factors, which together make them clean, safe and hygienic.

Councils, hotels, shopping centres and more take part in the competition.

Inspectors pay a visit to each toilet before issuing a bronze, silver, gold, platinum or diamond rating. There are then specific awards for the best performing toilets in a variety of categories.
