Cricket chiefs offer 'free day in the sun' for flood-affected families and emergency services personnel

WORCESTERSHIRE County Cricket Club is giving more than 2,000 tickets, including food, to families affected by Storm Dennis back in 2020, after being unable to do so during restricted capacities during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

The club will extend a warm welcome to all those affected and the emergency services who helped everyone through the devastation caused by the storm on Sunday, August 14, as Worcestershire host Derbyshire in the Royal London Cup.

The day promises to entertain the whole family, including free face painting and circus skills workshops. In addition, during the interval, youngsters will be able to play on the famous New Road pitch with our Cricket Skills Session and post-match, the players will be ‘in the dugout’ to sign autographs and photos.

Twenty young cricketers from Bewdley Cricket Club, who were themselves affected by Storm Dennis, will be forming a guard of honour at the start of the game.

Back in February 2020, chair Fanos Hira recognised that whilst everyone at Worcestershire County Cricket is well versed in dealing with the effects of flooding at New Road, the storm caused widespread devastation and suffering in the Worcestershire area and promised a free “day in the sun” for all those affected.

Fanos Hira commented, “Back in 2020, we promised a free day in the sun for all affected by Storm Dennis.

“We wanted to offer a free day at the cricket in 2020 but unfortunately couldn’t do so that year and the following year due to the pandemic.

Whilst we are well used to dealing with flooding here at New Road, Storm Dennis caused widespread suffering across the county, and we hope that this small gesture allows those affected to come and enjoy some cricket here at New Road this summer.
