A GROUP of former and current Worcestershire breast cancer patients recently committed to a virtual walk from Worcester to Brest in France and back, smashing their mileage and fundraising targets for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven.
The group, who called themselves the Brest Walkers, was formed of members of a support group, the Last Friday Support Group (LFG), run by Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven.
The group which includes women with ages ranging from 30-70 meets (virtually at the moment) on the final Friday of the month, as well as hosting quizzes and other socials in between, all co-ordinated and run Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven’s Fundraising Administrator Jacquie Clements, who also took part.
Throughout Pink October the LFG walked to Brest (where else?!) in France and back. Individually, group members planned to walk, run or cycle 1,378 miles between them – the equivalent of the distance from the Worcestershire Breast Unit to Brest and back. Their original aim was to raise at least £1,378 for the charity.
However, they have smashed that and collectively walked 2,222 miles. And at the time of writing, have raised £5,689 and are hoping to reach £6,000.
Jacquie Clements said: “We are all breast cancer patients treated in Worcestershire & have benefitted from the support of this wonderful local charity, that I am now proud to work for. To say the group has grown and truly supported each other through difficult times is an understatement and close friendships have also developed. Walking throughout October has not only raised money but many of our group are seeing the post treatment health benefits of regular exercise and will continue to walk in this way.”
