Celebration of market gardening heritage

Evesham Editorial 29th Jun, 2019   0

A CELEBRATION of Evesham’s former market gardening heritage will be held in the heart of the town at a drop-in event.

More than 1,300 market gardening ‘hovels’ were once built in and around Evesham and the event at the town hall next Saturday (July 6) will give residents the chance to discover and share memories of the Vale’s traditional market gardening.

The drop in event will take place from 11am to 2pm and is open to all, whether visitors want to find out more or have pictures and memories they would like to share.

For centuries market gardening shaped the landscape and history of the Vale of Evesham. This event forms part of the Market Gardening Heritage project which aims to celebrate and preserve this important local heritage.

Nina O’Hare, community project officer at Worcestershire County Council said: “We’d love to hear from anyone who has photos or memories of market gardening in order to help preserve a record for the future, as so much as already been lost – you don’t need to have been a grower yourself.

“Equally, if you’re new to the area, this is great opportunity to find out about a crucial chapter of the area’s history.”

The Market Gardening Heritage project is being led by Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
