Businesses quids in with the £5 challenge

Evesham Editorial 15th Jul, 2021   0

SHOPPERS in Evesham and Pershore are being encouraged to spend £5 a week in an independent shop or hospitality business.

Wychavon District Council’s £5 challenge, which has been inspired by Totally Locally’s national Fiver Fest campaign, was created because a study by the Federation of Small Businesses found for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business (SME) 63p was re-spent in the local area compared to 40p in every £1 with a larger business.

If every adult in Wychavon spent £5 a week throughout the year with a local business, a staggering £27.2million would be going into local businesses.

To encourage residents to take the challenge, the council will be putting the spotlight on various businesses’ stories such as Broadway’s luxury perfume store, Scents on The Green, and Pershore’s new bar, The Claude Choules.

There are many reasons to shop local such as the unique product knowledge independent retailers have, their passion and commitment to customer service and it’s often better for the environment too as goods are sourced locally.

Martin King, executive board member for Town Centres at Wychavon District Council, said: “Where you spend your money matters.

“Shopping locally can seem daunting, but you don’t have to spend loads to make a difference! All you have to do is commit to spending the £5 you would normally give to a national retailer or online e-commerce giant with a local business on your doorstep.”
