YOUNG learners at Bengeworth CE Academy opened their doors to welcome Evesham’s MP Nigel Huddleston to their National Poetry Day celebrations.
Pupils aged from six to 10-years-old performed a variety of poems which had been written during the last year by the children themselves.
The chosen theme was ‘Freedom’, which was interpreted creatively to inspire poetry performances in a range of poetic genres including group performance poetry, solo recital and visual poetry.
Specialist poetry tutor Debra Bertulis and assistant headteacher Rachel Sénèque have developed a rich English Language curriculum at Bengeworth over the last two years and see the Poetry Day celebration as a platform to share the successful outcomes for pupils.
Headteacher David Coaché said: “The depth of thought and precision of language demonstrated through children’s vocabulary choices has been remarkable to listen to throughout the performance.
“I am delighted that Nigel Huddleston has once again been able to join us for this event, adding an important sense of occasion that inspires children to enjoy performing to the highest standard they can reach.”
Mr Huddleston said: “Some of the poems read out were old favourites, but many poems had been written by the pupils themselves, and I was hugely impressed with the performances and quality of writing that was on display.
“Some of the passionate deliveries would not have looked out of place in the House of Commons.
“Hopefully I was privy to some of the early work of a future poet laureate or stage actor.”
