HEINZ are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Birmingham’s World famous Spaghetti Junction by releasing 500 ‘limited edition’ tins of its popular pasta.

Drivers have now been using the renowned motorway interchange system north of the Second City for 50 years.

The complex web of elevated roads was quickly coined ‘Spaghetti Junction’ due to its tangle of motorway, which a newspaper at the time described as a ‘cross between a plate of spaghetti and an unsuccessful attempt at a Staffordshire knot’.

The limited edition cans feature a bespoke ‘Spaghetti Junction’ design on the label, with spaghetti strands emulating the winding roads and locations of Birmingham motorway hub, complete with little cars journeying along the spaghetti road.

Gina Cock at Heinz Pasta said: “At Heinz Pasta, we love to bring smiles to mealtimes and when we heard it was the 50th anniversary of Spaghetti Junction this year, we couldn’t resist designing this playful limited edition can to celebrate.

“We think that Spaghetti Junction is as iconic as our very own tinned spaghetti, so it was only right that they joined forces on such a special anniversary.”

The tins – released today – are expected to sell out very quickly so people are urged to grab them when they can.

National Highways Customer Service Director, Melanie Clarke said: “It’s a fitting tribute to see Spaghetti Junction immortalised in – of course – a tin of spaghetti.

“It goes to show the enduring appeal of the road 50 years on since it first opened to traffic.

“The structure is a real feat of engineering and it’s an iconic part of England’s motorway network which from the moment it first opened, really captured the imagination of the public and motorists.

“At National Highways we’re proud to maintain and look after the structure for the 220,000 vehicles that use the road every day and here’s to the next 50 years of Spaghetti Junction.”

The 500 cans are available on heinztohome.co.uk for just £1.50 + P&P whilst stocks last, so be quick if you want to grab a piece of history.
