Spain's Islands: 5 Things You Didn't Know

Spain is one of the world’s most beautiful countries. While many think immediately of Madrid, Spain is attractive to many planning a holiday for its beaches and various islands. Majorca is one of these popular destinations as it boasts crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, and plenty of celebrity sightings. Although it sounds like it would cost a small fortune to visit the region, cheap deals to Majorca are often easy to find.

As you plan your holiday, think about what your goals are for the trip. Do you want to see Spain’s islands for what they are or just stick to the tourist traps?

If you go to Majorca with the main goal of enjoying the beaches, you are in luck. If that is the only goal you have, you will definitely miss out on what Majorca has to offer. The rest of the island is an adventure waiting to happen. Here’s a list of five things you didn’t know about Majorca.

1. Majorca is so much more than beaches

Celebrity sightings, crystal blue waters and pristine sandy beaches are quite a draw, especially if you are trying to get away from it all. Majorca has more than 400km of beautiful coastline, but the island has so much more to offer.

Further inland, away from the beaches and holiday resorts, you’ll find large, undeveloped areas, small quaint villages and inexpensive property. The remote areas on the northwest side of the island near the Tramuntana Mountains and the Soller Valley are both beautiful and private.

2. Majorca is not just a tourist trap

Though there are plenty of cheap deals to Majorca, it is not just a tourist-heavy holiday destination. It is true that many people visit Majorca and the other Spanish islands throughout the year on holiday, but most of them stick to the sandy beaches.

There is a whole other population of locals and investors who build second homes on the island. If you want to reside in the wealthiest area of Majorca, consider the south-west side where you can find Santa Ponsa and Puerto Andratx. Yachts and elaborate housing are commonplace. A one-bedroom flat may cost around £200,000 with a villa setting you back about £500,000.

3. You can’t expand on casitas in Majorca

Property investors, as well as those simply wanting to own a holiday home in Majorca, should be aware that it is actually illegal to build onto or expand existing casitas or olivars. Many realtors will tell prospective buyers that this is a possibility, but it is in fact illegal. Local authorities will require such illegal buildings to be demolished, with no exceptions.

Casitas are small, lovely villas, usually consisting of one or two bedrooms made of stone. Olivars are casitas that happen to be situated in an olive grove. Such villas can often be purchased for around £150,000 including the land that surrounds it.

4. Majorca is full of natural wonder

A place that has olive groves, beaches and mountains must be naturally beautiful, but one must visit Majorca to truly appreciate its natural wonder. The mountains located inland prevent overcrowding and too many resorts.

Throughout the region you can also find a variety of wildlife preserves, parks and paths. Whoever said that Majorca was for beach lovers alone? Many cheap deals to Majorca may offer a fantastic time at the beach, but look carefully as others will outline all that the island has to offer.

5. Majorca is addicting

It is often said that once you visit Majorca, you may never want to leave. Just skim through the many websites and travel books dedicated to Spain’s islands and you’ll agree. You will agree that it is an undeniable statement once you have been.

The beach, the mountains, the local food, the markets, the culture, all of it combined makes Majorca a truly magical place. As you look for cheap deals to Majorca, consider this list of things you may not want to miss:

  1. Palma Cathedral: The rose window alone is comprised of more than 1,200 pieces of stained glass.
  2. Palau March Museum: This museum has more than 30 pieces by Salvador Dali and was built by a swindler and pirate.
  3. The Almudaina Palace: This palace is one of the oldest remaining buildings on the island.
  4. The Bellver Castle: A piece of unique architecture and a sight to see.
  5. The Diocesan Museum: This museum is home to some of the most important Gothic works of all time.
