Mediterranean holidays: secret places the guide books won't teach you

With popular destinations such as Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey all being situated in the Mediterranean, holidays in this region are a common adventure for a number of British residents. But, rather than visiting the same areas as everyone else, why don’t you explore some of the hidden gems of this beautiful region by visiting the secret places which won’t appear in your normal guide book?

In order to make the most of a holiday to this illustrious region, individuals will more than likely undertake a tour of the area. This is one of the easiest ways to see a wide selection of countries and attractions but will not give people the chance to fully experience the real Mediterranean unless sufficient time is spent in each location.

For those looking to experience more than your standard tourist hot-spot, here are some of the secret places found in the Mediterranean’s most popular hot-spots:

Spain

With Spain continuing to be the most popular destination for British travellers it is no wonder that those looking for holidays in Spain are after something a little different. Of course, experiencing a new side to this beautiful country doesn’t mean you have to change your holiday plans entirely and a number of the country’s popular regions have hidden gems located close by.

For example, the island of Formentera is just one hour’s ferry trip away from the party capital Ibiza but offers a completely different atmosphere to busier areas of Spain. Holidays which include a trip here will give visitors the chance to stroll along glorious, pristine beaches whilst enjoying the spectacularly clear waters and stunning cliffs and coves.

Alternatively, those holidaying on the island of Mallorca may be surprised to find that the north of the island features landscapes which are virtually untouched by human interference. Looking for villas to rent in Spain in this area will allow tourists to view the spectacular mountains and rugged rural landscapes.

Turkey

As a holiday destination, Turkey has become increasingly popular over recent years yet tourists have been failing to see the full potential of this country. The Telegraph recently reported on the “hidden gems” of this beautiful country and revealed that there are plenty of great areas for tourists to visit which are outside of the typical areas.

The Telegraph recommended a number of areas just outside of Istanbul, such as Bursa and Edirne (two old capitals of the Ottoman Empire). These areas are said to feature both architectural attractions through beautiful mosques but are also said to hold cultural events such as the annual oil-wrestling championship.

The Guardian also recommended a visit to Safranbolu, an area which has retained a large proportion of its Ottoman heritage – making it perfect for history enthusiasts. The surrounding canyon system and nearby gorge also make this area a paradise for those with a love of nature – giving them the chance to see one of Mother Nature’s secrets attractions.

Italy

Another popular destination, most travellers to Italy will visit the famous regions of Sorrento, Venice or Rome. Within these areas there are a number of fantastic attractions, many of which are not as well advertised as others.

Those planning to visit Sorrento will undoubtedly be considering a trip to the nearby ruins of Pompeii. However, few people think to visit the other, less famous, site of Herculaneum. This is a smaller site but features a far lower volume of visitors and can therefore give individuals the chance to experience as much history as they can manage.

Other options for hidden treasures in Italy include the island of Favignana. This is a beautiful and quiet island overlooked by most travellers and therefore a safe haven for those after a truly relaxing escape.
