5 questions to ask yourself when choosing a wine

Selecting the right wine for you and your friends can be a veritable minefield. There is such variety that it's hard to know where the value is. But fear not; here is a crash course so you can buy wines that are right for you.

What am I eating?

This is a crucial factor in deciding which wine to buy. Thankfully, most good wines explain on the label which foods go with each particular bottle. As a rule, whites go with fish, pasta and salads, while red wines are great with many meats.

What age should my wine be?

Most whites and rosés should be consumed within five years. Reds are much more varied.

How much should I spend?

Potentially, you can get a great wine for £5 and a terrible one for £30. As a rule in the UK, if you spend £10 at a good wine shop or supermarket, you will be getting an excellent wine for most tastes.

Do I need to chill it?

Whites and rosés, yes; reds, no.

What am I doing tomorrow?

Have a think about what plans you have for the next day. This should dictate to the amount of wine you buy!
