THE CONSERVATIVE candidate for Mid-Worcestershire will be named on November 22 following an American style 'open primary'.
Mid Worcestershire Conservative Association confirmed the event will be held at 6pm at Pershore High School and will allow anyone registered to vote in the constituency to have their say - even if they do not belong to the party
And Conservative officials have urged Evesham residents to have their say on the person to replace Peter Luff, who is to step
down at the 2015 General Election.
It is the first time such a process, modelled on a system routinely used in America, will have been used to select a Conservative candidate in Worcestershire.
The party used the process before the 2010 general election to select Sarah Woolaston as the candidate for Totnes in Devon, she later became the MP.
Candidates had until Tuesday (October 22) to submit their applications to become the candidate for what is one of the safest Conservative-held seats in Worcestershire and the country.
Local party chiefs have now begun the process to whittle down the list to around 15 possible contenders who will be discussed by the association's Executive Council on November 16.
The final four candidates will then be chosen and presented to voters from across Evesham at the primary on November 22.
Association chairman Gerry O’Donnell, said: “I am delighted with the number of candidates who have come forward and made
application to be selected as the candidate for 2015.
"We have a difficult task on our hands now to sift those applications and present a selection for interview to our executive council.
"I am confident that at the end of that rigorous process, Mid Worcestershire will have an excellent Conservative candidate to fight the next election.
"And the candidate will know that the wider electorate have given their support through the open primary process," he added.
