TWO DAYS of music, food and farming will be brought together at Evesham's newest festival this summer.

Organisers of AsparaFest, which takes place on June 1 and 2 at Ashdown Farm, are hoping it will attract about 5,000 people including hundreds of families.

Building on the five-year success of the quirky British Asparagus Festival visitors will be able to enjoy bands, performers and entertainers along with food and drink producers, demonstrations of country crafts, a vintage fairground and displays of early agricultural techniques.

The festival, which is being backed by Wychavon District Council, will be the highlight of the two-month asparagus season which also features the Great British Asparagus Run on April 23.

The Vale's most famous vegetable will dominate the theme of AsparaFest as well including the crowning of the asparagus king and a world first - Gus the Asparagus Man performing on stage with his Gussettes.

It is hoped the event will rival the likes of the Big Chill and Gloucestershire's Wychwood Festival as it develops over the next few years.

Nigel Smith, landlord of the Fleece Inn in Bretforton, is organising the event.

"The Asparagus Festival has attracted international media attention and has huge support, not just locally, but throughout the UK," he said.

"Given its success, the AsparaFest has already attracted a lot of interest from people wanting to be a part of it.

"Everyone loves food festivals, music festivals, county and village shows so we’re bringing the best of them all together in one unique offering."
