A GROUP of students will be putting their skills to the ultimate test next month when they take part in a national competition.
Pershore High School youngsters Carys Evans, Andrew Hemming, Simon Cartwright and George Stephens will travel to Manchester for the finals of The National Science and Engineering Competition on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15.
In order to get to the final the group have been working on a long-term project to develop quick and simple solutions to fix industrial gear boxes in cars in the quickest time possible.
The group's project is facilitated through the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) which is a national programme providing students hands-on experience of engineering with the sponsorship and help of local companies.
Neighbouring engineering firm Allen Gears were on hand to help the students and gave them several challenges to complete and taught them ways on how to problem solve.
Since progressing to the national finals the students have been preparing hard by working on gathering feedback from companies, universities and professionals to help take their project forward.
Student Andrew Hemming said taking part in the project has been a great learning experience.
"As well as being thoroughly enjoyable, preparing for the National finals has provided us with a good insight into the world of engineering, enabling us to prepare for a successful career in this field," he said.
Lol Conway, technology teacher at Pershore High School, added: "The EES scheme provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to link an apply subjects in a real world context. This is an important and exciting way of learning and brings the very best out in our students."
