Schools re-open after snow disruption

MOST schools and the majority of transport services are back up and running after heavy snow caused significant disruption over the weekend.

Only Blackminster Middle School was closed today (Monday) and Honeybourne First School decided to open at 10am to give parents and children more time to get there on icy roads.

On Friday just a handful of schools were open and the majority of bus routes cancelled or ran a limited service.

Up to 3cm of snow came down during Sunday and into the early hours of this morning in some areas of Worcestershire, while sub-zero temperatures also made for difficult driving conditions.

But the Vale escaped the worst of the snowfall meaning no schools were forced to close in the city today, despite many closures in other areas such as Redditch and other parts of the north of the county.

Difficult driving conditions on some minor roads continue to cause some disruption to bus services including the following routes:

28 / 28A (Stratford – Bidford – Evesham) : This service is operating a main road route between Stratford and Evesham, omitting Bidford and some other villages.

552 / 553 (Evesham – East Vale Hopper) : This service is running but is omitting Long Lartin estate and Honeybourne estate.

564 / 565 (Pershore – Evesham Village Hopper) : This service is running but is omitting Abbots Morton, Inkberrow estate, Church Lench, Lenchwick, Hipton Hill, Wick, Kington and Hinton-on-the-Green village.

Gritting crews are working around the clock to keep the Vale moving but the advice to motorists remains to alter their driving to suit conditions and never assume it is safe to travel at normal speeds just because a road has been gritted.

The immediate problem is ice as temperatures are set to remain below freezing throughout this week dropping as low as minus five in the evenings.

The odd snow flurry could fall this afternoon (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday), while the rest of the week is forecast to remain dry with some sunshine.
