THE FIRST picture of how Pershore's refurbished library will look when it re-opens this summer has been unveiled.

Pershore Town Council has now submitted plans to Wychavon District Council for the library's planned expansion this year.

The idea is to start building work in April and have it completed in either July or August.

The town council bought the library in 2011 after Worcestershire County Council said it was unable to keep paying the spiralling maintenance costs of the building in Church Street.

It says it wants to transform the library from the basic book lending operation to a modern building fit for the current generation and will include a meeting room, teenage book area, new toilets and staff rooms and separate work and reading rooms.

To make room for this, the ground floor will be made bigger with a single-story extension to the rear and a re-arrangement of the inside.

While building work takes place the library will move into the town hall until it is finished with Pershore Town Council set to put the contract out to tender next month.

Pershore Mayor Charles Tucker said he and everyone at the town council were very excited by the plans after councillors were presented the plans at a meeting last month.

"The new library is going to be a fantastic benefit for Pershore," he told the Observer.

"It is going to be a really updated and fully modern building which everyone in the town will be proud of.

"We are hopeful work can begin early April. There is no fix date as yet but it is dependant on the outcome of the tenders."

Residents in Pershore will be able to see the plans for themselves next month when public exhibitions will be held. The town council are hoping to start these on the week commencing February 4 at the library.
