MUMS-TO-BE in Evesham are set to benefit after a new high-tech portable scanner was bought for the town's hospital.

The Phillips CX50 device, which cost more than £28,000, allows women in their first three months of pregnancy to have higher quality screening for conditions such as Down's Syndrome at Evesham Community Hospital.

The scanner, which will be used in the hospital's antenatal clinic, was funded by donations from the Friends of Evesham Community Hospital.

Previously the hospital's old machine was not able to calculate the precise measurements needed to identify the chance of a baby developing certain conditions.

The money to buy the device was raised after Aldona Morrison, midwife sonographer lead for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, approached the Friends of Evesham Community Hospital.

"I am so grateful to the Friends of Evesham Community Hospital for allowing us to offer such a vital service in the community," she said.

"The purchasing of this new equipment will help us to further improve our services and make this significant test more accessible to women."

Weekly clinics are being set up at the hospital offering tests for women with around 60 scans expected to be carried out every month.

Frances Smith, chairman of The Friends of Evesham Community Hospital, said having the new device was great news for the Evesham Community Hospital.

"The Friends of Evesham Community Hospital were pleased to be able to commit funds to this very worthwhile project," she added.

"As supporters of the hospital we are pleased that by purchasing this important piece of equipment, expectant mothers can access this service closer to home and we are pleased that the Acute Trust is expanding this valuable service at Evesham."
