FRIENDS and family of a much-loved Pershore councillor and community figurehead packed into Pershore Abbey for his memorial service.

David Shaw, who served on Pershore Town Council for more than 22 years, died earlier this month at the age of 64.

Wednesday's (January 23) service, which celebrated his life and remembered what he did for the town, saw everyone wear bright colours - as requested by his family.

Mr Shaw was one of the founder members of the Pershore Plum Festival which has since grown to be one of the town's biggest events.

He was also a member of the Pershore Carnival Committee and other organisations within the town.

Pershore mayor Charles Tucker said Mr Shaw was a great credit to Pershore and would be deeply missed.

"David was a real feature for Pershore and had contact with so many people in the town and different organisations," he told the Observer.

"Pershore was always at his heart and always had a comment to make whatever the business was. We will remember him for starting the Plum fayre and for many other things he worked on for the town."
