EVESHAM'S impressive start to 2013 was brought to a halt on Saturday as their Herefordshire visitors secured an excellent win.

There was no sign of the third from bottom visitors springing a shock against their fourth placed hosts in the opening stages as Evesham started well and Simon Corbett secured good field position which allowed the back row of Chambers, Garrett and Shotton to earn the hosts a penalty and a shot at goal which Mike Diston converted.

Ledbury responded and indiscipline from Evesham gave them a kick to the corner and the resulting drive led to a forwards score in the corner which was converted to make it 7-3 to Ledbury.

Evesham rallied and within minutes good forward work from Pete Taylor and Clive Smart earned another penalty for Diston to convert.

The pressure continued and good lineout work from Lippett, Stock and Smart led to a perfect set play as Shotton set the ball up in midfield for Humpston to find his blindside winger Zac Reid, who offloaded to Henry Webb who cut inside to crash over and give Evesham an 11-7 lead.

The momentum swung, however, and a hardworking Ledbury side laid siege to the Evesham line and their fly half jinked through for a score which gave the visitors a half time lead.

With both sides exchanging possession, the game turned when a very dubious penalty was given against Evesham for pulling down their own maul.

Ledbury kicked for the corner and from the resulting position scored another try.

Evesham then looked to press on but breaks from Huckvale, Jackson and Lasota proved to be in vain as the ball would not quite fall in Evesham's favour.

The game was as good as over when Liam Green dithered in the midfield and then floated a pass straight into the opposition's hand for an interception try.

Evesham battled on and, despite countless penalties in the Ledbury 22m not resulting in a sin-binning, managed to grab a consolation score as Garrett and Humpston went blind to find Diston on the angle to score.

Evesham now prepare for their next league encounter at mid-table Kings Norton on January 26.
