A NEW holiday home for people with learning disabilities has opened in Evesham.

The six-bedroom house, called Ash Grove, is located just off Davies Road and run by the Heart of England Mencap charity.

All of the bedrooms are en-suite, there is accommodation for one member of staff, and one bedroom is on the ground floor and ideal for people with limited mobility.

Heart of England Mencap bought the Ash Grove property last summer as part of an expansion in which it wants to provide a wider range of services across the county and neighbouring Warwickshire.

It will also provide the charity with much needed additional accommodation allowing it to support more people with learning disabilities and their families.

The new property was officially opened by Ruth Daniell, a Mencap customer, who cut the ribbon with Helena Wallis, Heart of England Mencap's interim chief executive.

The opening was also attended by Evesham Mayor, Coun Robert Raphael, and Mayoress, Coun Diana Raphael.

Ms Wallis said demand for its respite care service was high and the charity's other short break holiday home in Stratford was often full.

"Short break care is a really valuable service offering a holiday and change of routine for people with learning disabilities and offering their families essential respite," she added.

"Our short break facilities are also often used as a stepping stone to a more independent life by some of our clients.

"Our existing Stratford short break property has five bedrooms and is often fully booked. With Ash Grove in place we can now offer our service to more people, plus give them a choice of where to take their holiday. The new property is also more easily accessible to families living in Worcestershire."
