A GOAL two minutes into stoppage time deprived Evesham United of their first ever point at Penydarren Park as the hosts sealed their first home victory since early November with this New Year's Day success.

The last-gasp winner from Aaron Cornwall was tough on Paul West's side who went into the match aiming to extend their unbeaten league run to three matches and did enough to earn something from the game.

However, their hopes were dashed when Cornwall rose to head home Steve Williams' cross and leave the visitors empty-handed.

Play-off hopefuls Merthyr dominated the early exchanges without causing United keeper Tom Cross too many problems and, with skipper Matt Sysum once again in commanding form at the back, the Welsh outfit's frontline rarely had a look in.

At the other end, Jamal Clarke was left unmarked at the back post but failed to get a touch to Carl Brown's cross and then Brown himself volleyed over as the first half drew to a close without a goal.

Evesham stuck to their guns and continued to look dangerous on the break after the interval as Sam Adkins, Leigh Downing and Brown all went close to finding the net.

As the game entered stoppage time Evesham's top scorer Marcus Palmer - on as an 83rd minute substitute - smacked a shot against the woodwork before Cornwall broke United's hearts by heading home from close range.

There was still time before the end for Palmer to see his goalbound drive deflected wide with home keeper Giles Cutlan beaten.

Abingdon United are the visitors to the Spiers & Hartwell Jubilee Stadium tomorrow as the Robins look to improve on their 13th placed position.
