Yate Ladies 2nds 0 Bretforton Ladies 1
West Clubs Women's Hockey League North Division
THE SCORELINE does not reflect the effort and steely determination that Bretforton Ladies produced to win this game on Saturday.
Captain Kate Mitchell was thrilled to see her side come home with all three points and their first clean sheet of the season in a match they dominated from start to finish.
There was more good news to follow when it was discovered Leominster had defeated Jaspers and Bret's four-point cushion at the top of the table had been restored.
The next challenge awaiting Bret arrives tomorrow when they host Leominster, who are now in second place above Jaspers on goal difference.
Bret could, and perhaps should, have been 4-0 up at half time. Several short corner attempts were cleared on the goalline and Bret forwards Deb Slatter and Sarah Hall were unlucky from open play on a few occasions.
After regrouping at half time, Bret were determined not to leave south Gloucestershire empty-handed.
Liz Murray-White not only defended like a demon at right back but continually pushed forward with Julie Hall and Emma Lowe to really pressurise Yate.
Early in the second half Murray-White was rewarded for her efforts when she danced into the opposition D and simply rocketed a shot high into the roof of the Yate goal.
Sarah Cook and Sue Headington were sure-footed as ever in defence to deny Yate any chance of getting back into the game and the midfield trio of Lisa Workman, Hayley Whitehouse and Daisy Wheeler kept the ball moving sweetly and kept possession cleanly.
Bret absolutely deserved this result and the girls were grateful to Julie and Andrew Wheeler for their continued support in such awful weather and to Eastell Fitness for sponsoring the match ball.
Tomorrow's match begins at 10.30am at Evesham High School astro-turf. Saturday's player of the match was Murray-White and the plonker was Daisy Wheeler.
