Pershore could host new cycling event

A NEW family cycling event winding through the streets of Pershore could be in the pipeline.

Pershore Mayor Charles Tucker is looking into the possibility of the town holding such an event and will discuss the idea with fellow councillors and other key officials in the coming weeks to see if something could be planned in the future.

The idea came about after a recent visit to Pershore's twin town, Plouay. Situated in north-west France, the area plays host to road cycle grand-prixs such as the GP Ouest-France and GP de Plouay.

Cycling's biggest event the Tour de France has visited the town three times in 1998, 2002 and in 2006.

Mr Tucker told the Observer it would be great for the town to hold such an event and would help build on the legacy left behind from the Summer Olympic Games.

"Plouay is a town very much into its cycling hosting grand-prixs and the Tour De France goes through there on occasions," he said.

"Following our recent visit we thought it would be a good idea for Pershore to have its own cycling event. This would be something for all families in and around Pershore to get involved in and not just for specific keen cyclists.

"If it gets the support and goes ahead this will be a different sort of event for the town and would add to Pershore's event calendar joining great events such as the Carnival and River Festival."
