Carnival to celebrate history of Pershore

NEXT year's Pershore Carnival will celebrate the town's unique and rich history, it has been confirmed.

Carnival committee members voted unanimously on Monday (October 22) to make next year's big celebratory event a Pershore Through The Years theme.

This summer saw one of the town's best ever carnivals as thousands took to the streets of the town to celebrate the Jubilee themed event which went hand in hand with The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations across the UK.

Pershore Carnival Committee chairman Colin Shepherd told the Observer anticipation is already buzzing ahead of next year's big event, set for Monday, May 27, and urged as many organisations to get involved as possible.

"The carnival was a huge success this year and for us to try and make it a little better next year we had to think of a theme which people would appreciate," he said.

"We did look at doing a Vikings theme but at the meeting we came up with a Pershore Through The Years theme and thought that would open it up to many different factors of Pershore history's such as the floods and its market history.

"Personally I would want people in the town to celebrate what they remember happened in the past. It's another great chance for the whole town to come together and celebrate what hopefully will be another wonderful occasion.

"We would love to hear from any schools, sports clubs or businesses in the town who would like to get involved and celebrate their own piece of history on the day. We will now hold monthly meetings and start planning ahead as there is a lot to do."

And Mr Shepherd said the committee hoped the event can follow up what was a very successful carnival in the summer.

"It would be great to emulate what happened this year," he added. "But if we can get somewhere near to the last carnival in terms of the number of people who came along then it will be a fantastic day again - providing we get good weather of course."

Anyone who would like to join the Pershore Carnival committee or who has any ideas they would like to suggest are invited to attend the next carnival meeting on Monday, November 19 at Pershore Sports Club on Defford Road at 7pm.
