TRADERS in Broadway fed up with seeing tonnes of cardboard going to landfill each year have struck up a pioneering new deal which will see it recycled instead.
Previously shop and business owners in the historic Cotswold village were left with no choice but to take the majority of their cardboard to the tip.
Recycling services were provided by Wychavon District Council at Broadway Football Club but only for glass, plastics and paper.
After seeing just how much cardboard was being thrown away members of the village's traders association decided enough was enough and have now struck up a deal with Chipping Campden company Stow Skips who will collect cardboard for businesses every Tuesday and take it away to be recycled.
Nigel Robinson, chairman of Broadway Traders Association, led the scheme and said he was delighted the cardboard could finally be saved.
"We recognise the environmental benefit of recycling this cardboard which will reduce the need for landfill and cut out the cost of transportation to the landfill site.
"Stow Skips have been very willing to help and I am confident it will be a good partnership.
"We would rather help conserve the environment by recycling than seeing the countryside and sea covered in windmills."
