A DEDICATED donor who has given blood more than 75 times has been recognised for helping to save hundreds of people's lives.
Douglas Edgeworth from Evesham was rewarded with a special crystal plate at a recent awards ceremony for his extraordinary commitment which has seen him give blood over a period of 42 years.
Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people, so in Mr Edgeworth's case he has potentially helped save the lives of up to 225 patients in local hospitals through donating blood.
The ceremony, which is hosted by NHS Blood and Transplant and acknowledges the commitment long-serving donors give to saving lives, saw more than 50 donors from across the country all recognised for their dedication at the Bromsgrove Hilton
Mr Edgeworth said the feeling of inspiration when potentially saving someone's life was the reason behind his stunning milestone.
"My late father-in-law gave blood and I went with him and have continued to give blood ever since," he said.
"The thoughts that my small contribution may save a life has kept me giving."
Shai Mistry, lead donor relations manager at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "The commitment that these blood donors have shown to donating blood throughout their lives is remarkable and we hope this inspires others to follow.
"Blood has a limited shelf life of 35 days for red blood cells and just seven days for platelets. Because of this, it is vital both existing and new blood donors come forward so we can ensure vital supplies of blood are available for the patients that need them over the summer months."
Anyone from the age of 17 and who is in a general good health condition can become a blood donor. For more information visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 2323.
