Teenager seriously injured after heavy fall

A TEENAGE cyclist was airlifted to hospital with a serious leg injury which saw the brake lever lodged into his leg after a heavy fall.

Ambulance and fire crews were sent to the scene at the wooded area of Washington Road in Wickhamford yesterday (Thursday) just before 3.30pm when the young boy fell on his handle bars.

Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service gave the teenager pain relief before firefighters from Evesham fire station supported the bike and then used cutters to detach the brake lever from the bike.

With the lever still embedded in his leg the boy was lifted on a stretcher and then taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital for further treatment.

A West Midlands Ambulance spokeswoman said: "On arrival at the scene crews found a teenage boy who had become injured after falling onto the handle bars of his bike.

"The boy was treated for an injury to his leg after the brake handle had become lodged in his right thigh. The teenager was airlifted, with the brake handle still in situ to Birmingham Children's Hospital."

Watch Commander Russell Broadbent, from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, added: “This must have been a frightening ordeal for the lad, but he was extremely calm and brave throughout, despite having to wait some time for emergency services staff to reach him on foot.”
