Hi: 21° Lo:14° 7 day

SUE DAVIES is celebrating after becoming the Bowls England Women’s National 55 and over singles champion.
The Broadway BC star lifted the coveted title by pulling off a convincing 21-8 win over Buckinghamshire’s Sue Springell, sister of the club’s former president Peter Springell, in the final at Leamington Spa on Sunday.
It was the culmination of an exhausting, but very successful, few days for Davies who had to play ten games in four days, having also qualified for the Women’s National singles championship.
In that competition Davies won through to the semi-final but narrowly lost out to the eventual winner, Amy Truran from Sussex .
In the first round of the Over 55 singles, Davies beat a Cambridgeshire opponent.
In the second round she enjoyed a narrow 21-20 victory over Sussex, while 21-16 wins followed in the quarter final and semi final against Oxfordshire and Suffolk respectively.
The comfortable victory in the final ensured Davies picked up her second national title, having been the Women’s National Two Wood champion in 2010.
In the 25s and under ladies pairs championship, Broadway’s Amy Stanton, and her partner Sophie Inchley from Chester Road Bowling Club, were defending their title and reached the final again.
In what was always a close game they were 20-18 down but holding five shots and game with only the Sussex skips last wood to come.
But she drew the shot superbly to grab the title.
Broadway’s men have also qualified for the final stages of the National Two Rink competition at Worthing with a convincing 47-17 win against Chandos Park from Buckinghamshire.
Mick Aubrey and Dennis Hall at the front end for Richard Halls’ rink gave an awesome display of draw bowling to completely dominate their opposition and pave the way for a comprehensive victory by 25-6.
Andrew Walters had to work a bit harder for his 22-11 win but a score of seven after Walters took out the oppositions shot wood set them up for their win.
Broadway will appear at Worthing on August 22 against Wandilea BC.
